After a week of 5 a.m. starts, dusty game drives, and packing up every second morning, few things feel as good as stepping off a small plane onto Zanzibar and hearing the ocean instead of a diesel engine. This is why the safari-plus-beach combination is Tanzania's most popular travel format — the two experiences balance each other perfectly.
How to split your time
The classic combination is 5–7 nights on safari followed by 4–5 nights on Zanzibar. Shorter beach stays feel rushed after a long safari; longer stays are wonderful if you want proper diving, kite-surfing, or complete downtime. Ten to twelve nights total is the sweet spot for most first-time visitors to Tanzania.
How to get across
Direct scheduled flights connect the Serengeti, Arusha, and Kilimanjaro International Airport with Zanzibar daily. Typical flight time is 1–1.5 hours from the Serengeti or 1 hour from Arusha. We handle the booking and the transfer at both ends. Do not try to drive — the road option involves ferries and is far slower.
Where to stay on Zanzibar
The east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Michamvi) has the widest beaches and the best kitesurfing, but strong tidal shifts mean swimming is best at high tide. The north (Nungwi, Kendwa) has beautiful swimming beaches at all tides and the liveliest sunset scene. The southwest (Kizimkazi) is quiet and great for dolphins. Stone Town is worth 1–2 nights at the start or end for the food, history, and architecture.
What to do beyond the beach
Snorkelling and diving at Mnemba Atoll. A Stone Town food tour and spice farm visit. Sunset dhow cruises. Swimming with dolphins in Kizimkazi. Jozani Forest to see the endemic red colobus monkeys. Two or three activities is plenty — the point of Zanzibar is to slow down after safari.
Practical notes
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania with its own immigration desk; keep your passport handy on arrival. It is a conservative Muslim island — dress modestly in villages and Stone Town (beachwear is fine on resort beaches). Tipping is welcomed. Malaria risk is lower than on the mainland but still present — continue your prophylaxis.
