Serengeti National Park

Spanning nearly 15,000 square kilometres, the Serengeti is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve. Its name — from the Maasai 'Siringet' meaning 'the place where the land runs on forever' — perfectly captures the ecosystem: rolling short-grass plains in the south, granite kopjes rising like islands, and acacia woodland spreading north toward the Mara River.

The park is the beating heart of the Great Migration — the year-round movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra following the rains in a giant clockwise loop. Timing your visit to a specific phase (calving in the south, river crossings in the north) unlocks a completely different Serengeti experience.

Beyond the migration, the Serengeti holds the highest density of large predators in Africa. Lion prides here are among the largest ever recorded, cheetahs hunt on the open plains, and leopards drape from sausage trees along the Seronera River.
