About Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro is a natural amphitheatre 260 km² wide, filled with wildlife year-round. Home to the Big Five and a Maasai homeland.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. Its walls rise 600 metres above a lush, spring-fed floor of grassland, soda lakes and yellow-fever forest — a self-contained ecosystem that supports one of the densest permanent wildlife populations in Africa.

It is one of the few places on the continent where you can reliably see all of the Big Five in a single game drive: elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and the critically endangered black rhino. The crater is also a stronghold for spotted hyena and a large population of Grant's and Thomson's gazelles.

Above the crater rim, the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a rare model of shared land: Maasai pastoralists graze cattle alongside wildlife in the highlands, and cultural visits offer a genuine window into Maasai life beyond the safari track.
